Introduction

No matter what size your business is, the tax man is always after his cut - VAT, PAYE, Income Tax, Corporation Tax, Capital Gains Tax, National Insurance - the list goes on. Even when you've taken your last breath there's still Inheritance Tax ! Truly it is a case that, no matter what the size of your business, it's not how much you earn that matters rather how much you keep - and this of course applies just as much to individual taxpayers as it does to businesses.

Garbetts is a professional practice of Chartered Certified Accountants dedicated to looking after the needs of small and medium sized businesses, charities and individual taxpayers.

Unashamedly most of our work revolves around tax, since for both business and individuals this is a major expense and often a cause of worry and trouble. However our services do not stop there, we offer, of course, a full range of accountancy, auditing and consultancy services.

We aim to give a service that is personal, friendly, professional, customised to what you require and above all cost effective - we are very proud of our fair fees policy.

About The Practice

Garbetts was started in 1988 on a part time basis by Paul Garbett, who took the practice full time in 1995. Since then the practice has grown and employs a small team of technical and support staff, all with complimentary skills and keen to deliver a quality service to our clients.

Paul Garbett is a fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, and a Registered Auditor. He trained with practices on the Isle of Wight and in Portsmouth, and also spent some years working in the public sector before starting Garbetts.

Garbetts offices are in Brading, Isle of Wight. Normal office hours are 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday but appointments can be booked outside of these hours. The practice is fully computerised, and carries a well stocked technical library.

Our client base has expanded rapidly over the past few years, mainly by recommendation from existing clients, and covers a wide variety of trade sectors. As a general practice we aim to service businesses of all types, but we have particular specialisms in one-man contractor companies (ask about our special service packages), construction and charities. Although most of our clients are based in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, we have others in London, the Midlands, the North, and overseas.

Arnold House is easy to find. We are on the main Ryde to Sandown Road, at the Sandown end of Brading, on the right as you travel from Ryde or left as you travel from Sandown. Arnold House is on the bend adjacent to the Bullring and opposite the Wheatsheaf Public House. There is a 20mph speed limit through Brading, and the change from 20mph to 30mph takes place in the middle of our row of buildings, so look for the speed limit signs and you've found us.

Fair Fees Policy

We've listened to our clients.

They have told us they want one annual fee, at an agreed price, which is cost effective and with a choice of payment methods.

How's this then ?

One annual fee, agreed in advance, covering routine work

Competitive prices - often with a substantial saving to what you may be paying currently

Pay by cheque or monthly standing order

Like all accountants our fees are based around the time spent in dealing with our clients affairs at varying hourly rates, however by running our practice efficiently we find we can offer many businesses significant fee reductions, without cutting back on service.

We give our clients a quotation for all the routine accountancy, audit, taxation and consultancy services they are likely to require in the course of a year, and unless there is a major change in the size or nature of their business we will stick to that quotation. We generally hold fees for two years, and try to keep future rises in line with, or below, inflation. Fees can then be paid by cheque on completion of the annual accounts, or by monthly standing order.

Accountancy And Audit

Sometimes the annual accounts and audit can be regarded as a chore, not in the least because it is looking back over old ground rather than going forward. We like to take a more positive stance, in the belief that sound financial accounts must be the foundation for evaluating past performance and projecting future performance.

The needs of each client will differ - a labour only sub-contractor has different needs to a family partnership who in turn have different needs to an expanding hi-tech company. Whatever the requirements we have found that experience in a wide range of different trades combined with a time investment in understanding your business and a team of well trained staff enables us to minimise the number of queries we have to raise with you and make the process as painless and positive as possible, as well as enabling us to do our job efficiently - something on which we pride ourselves.

We like to see all our clients with their draft accounts so that key points and trends in performance can be discussed, as well as taxation, future performance, suggested improvements in bookkeeping or control, and the like.

We can help with:

Preparation of accounts for individuals, small sole traders and partnerships

Preparation and, where required by law, audit of accounts for companies and charities

Preparation of half year or quarterly management accounts

Taxation

Taxation services are split into two distinct areas; compliance services that is to say making sure that all necessary returns are made and that the correct tax liabilities are paid at the correct time and tax planning, which is the process of minimising current and future tax payments.

Our philosophy on tax is straightforward. We want to see our clients paying as little tax as possible, with a minimum amount of aggravation and paper work from the Inland Revenue or HM Customs & Excise.

Compliance
1996/97 saw the greatest change this century in the UK income tax system with the introduction of Self-Assessment and the change in the basis of assessing non incorporated businesses from a prior year basis to a current year basis. This follows on from similar changes introduced in 1993 for corporate tax-payers under the pay and file regime. These changes are based on the system in use in the USA where tax returns run to 40 pages and the Internal Revenue Service is the most feared of all government bodies. At a time of change, you need someone on your side to help you through the maze of guidance, rules and returns. 1999 saw Self-Assessment extended to Corporation Tax.

We can help you with:

Preparation of annual tax returns, both for companies and individuals

Preparation of tax computations supporting accounts

Preparation of Capital Gains Tax computations

Running your PAYE scheme - either on a regular basis, or just at the end of the year

Making VAT returns

Tax Planning

Since every business and every individual is different, with a different background, different goals, different circumstances, so our advice has to be different in each case - there are no off pat answers. However, we can help you with tax saving opportunities, which come from issues like:

Working abroad

Capital allowances on investment in fixed assets

Maximising relief on business overheads and expenses

Utilisation of business losses

Company car decisions

Pension provision

Tax free savings

Balancing income and relief's within a marriage

Planning and timing the realisation of capital gains

Estate planning

This list is not exhaustive. Tax planning best results from a regular dialogue between accountant and client - it's a two way process of communication.

Preparation of projections and comprehensive business plans for bankers and lenders in the format which they require and understand

Company formation, secretarial and restructuring

Buying and selling a business

Advice on personal financial planning (under the terms of the Financial Services Act, we cannot advise you on particular products only general issues, however we can introduce you to qualified independent brokers)
